Before you seriously start looking for a home, investigate your financing to determine what size of a loan you can be approved for. You can either get pre-approved by a lender or have your Buyer's Agent pre-qualify you. Knowing your situation will minimize potential headaches and it may strengthen your ability to negotiate. Being pre-approved does not obligate you to use that lender. Be upfront with them and let them know if you are going to shop the rate once you are in contract.
- Determine what type of mortgage will be best for you. With many mortgage products available it can be overwhelming. If your Buyer's Agent understands the differences, they can guide you through the choices. Not all lenders offer the same choices, so the advice you get may be oriented towards programs they offer.
- By analyzing your mortgage options in advance, you will avoid falling in love with a house that you can't buy with the financing you require.
- Review your credit in advance, even if you think you have good credit. There could be a mistake on your credit.You don't want credit mistakes to add more shear to the transaction.
